Class B Vehicles

Class B truck–Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds (11,793 kg), or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds (4536 kg) GVWR.

A few examples of the vehicles you MAY be able to drive with a Class B CDL

(with proper endorsements) include:

  • straight trucks

  • box trucks (ex. delivery drivers, couriers, etc.) 

  • dump trucks with small trailers


  • If the vehicle you test in has an Automatic transmission, your CDL will have that restriction and you will not be licensed to drive a manual transmission:

    • E - No manual transmission equipped CMV

                       "Skills test taken in a vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission.​"


Please remember to call or email the Olympia DOL office to request approval to test with a third party examiner: 


We can not finalize your test date until DOL gives this approval.


Class B = 80 total hours, including at least:

  • 40 hours - classroom instruction

  • 14 hours - street driving training

  • 8 hours - training in backing maneuvers

  • 8 hours - proficiency development

  • 10 hours - combined lab training, range training, and observation

DOL now requires these hours to be documented on their online portal.
